Saudi FMCG growth accelerates driven by household expansion as shoppers consolidate spending in Q2

Saudi Arabia FMCG market remains resilient while shoppers reduce purchase intensity and shift toward value-focused channels.

Saudi Arabia's FMCG market continued to grow in Q2 2026, but the drivers of that growth are changing. While overall volume remains positive, growth is increasingly being supported by population and household expansion rather than increased consumption from existing shoppers. Across categories, households are making fewer shopping trips, purchasing more deliberately and prioritising value as they manage tighter budgets.

The latest Worldpanel by Numerator data shows that FMCG volume growth is largely supported by a 5.2% increase in households during Q2, while volume per buyer declined more sharply than the annual trend. Shoppers are consolidating purchases into fewer trips and seeking greater basket efficiency, highlighting a more cautious consumption environment.

Essential categories help sustain FMCG growth

Beverages continued to grow in volume, helped by stronger penetration in carbonated soft drinks, although shoppers remained disciplined in their spending. Meanwhile, Dairy experienced a notable slowdown after being one of FMCG's strongest performing sectors over the past year, reflecting softer shopper demand during the quarter.

Personal Care and Home Care delivered comparatively stronger short-term momentum. Personal Care benefited from penetration gains and shopper focus on essential products, while Home Care growth was supported by expanding reach into more households, helping compensate for weaker usage intensity per buyer.

Discounters and Ecommerce continue to gain ground

One of the clearest trends emerging from the market is the growing importance of Discounters and Ecommerce. Both channels continued to gain share by offering shoppers a compelling combination of value and convenience.

Discounters increased their penetration, frequency and volume share, demonstrating that they are becoming routine shopping destinations rather than occasional value outlets. Ecommerce also accelerated, with more households incorporating online shopping into their everyday FMCG purchasing habits.

For manufacturers and retailers, the implications are clear. Growth strategies should focus on winning new households, strengthening mental and physical availability, and tailoring approaches to rapidly growing channels such as Discounters and Ecommerce. As shoppers become more selective and shopping occasions decline, ensuring brands are present, visible and relevant at the moment of choice becomes increasingly important.
