What do consumers really want from the smart home?

Understand what really drives purchase and satisfaction across the connected home — and where friction remains

The smart home is becoming more connected, but understanding what consumers own is only part of the picture. What makes them choose a device? What keeps them satisfied after purchase? And where does the experience still fall short?

Worldpanel by Numerator’s Smart Home study tracks ownership, purchasing, usage, satisfaction and switching across a 20,000-person U.S. consumer panel, covering six categories: smart cameras, doorbells, speakers, thermostats, displays and casting/streaming devices.

The findings reveal a common theme: consumers want smart technology to make life easier — not more complicated.

The app is now part of the product

The smart home experience increasingly extends beyond the physical device.

Among smart camera owners, 41% identify real-time alerts as a source of app satisfaction. For thermostat owners, 33% point to on-screen controls, while device pairing and app stability lead app satisfaction among casting and streaming owners.

The pain points are just as revealing. 16% of smart display owners cite on-screen controls as a source of app dissatisfaction, while 16% of casting and streaming owners cite app stability.

Ease of use remains fundamental

Across the connected home, simplicity consistently rises to the top.

60% of smart speaker buyers say ease of use is one of their main criteria when choosing a device. The same is true for 48% of smart display buyers and 45% of smart thermostat buyers.

But what “easy” means changes by category. Among casting and streaming buyers, 58% prioritize ease of installation and setup, while smart camera buyers place motion detection, ease of use and camera quality among their leading considerations.

The takeaway is simple: adding more features isn't necessarily enough.

Consumers also need those features to work intuitively in everyday life.

For brands, hardware and software can no longer be treated as separate experiences. Consumers judge the whole journey.

The purchase journey is evolving

Before a smart home device ever enters the home, consumers are navigating an increasingly diverse research journey.

Online reviews are a recurring touchpoint across categories, and newer influences are appearing too. The research already captures consumers consulting AI chatbots during product research and AI shopping agents influencing purchase decisions, suggesting another touchpoint brands may need to understand as the purchase journey evolves.

With all these new factors influencing the smart home market, it's increasingly important for companies to see the whole picture. The opportunity in smart home isn't simply about selling another connected device. It's about understanding how purchase motivations, product experiences and behaviors connect across the home.

By tracking consumers longitudinally across categories and their wider technology ecosystems, Worldpanel by Numerator's Smart Home study goes beyond ownership to reveal why consumers buy, what keeps them satisfied and where opportunities for growth and retention emerge over time.
